Meetings

Main Monthly Meetings

We meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month in St Mary's Church, Ferndown, at 2pm. We have speakers on topics of interest, visits from people who can help in a variety of fields, talented performers and quizzes. There are no special requirements, just come along, but if you are new, maybe with slight trepidation about coming, let us know (using the details on the contact page or by clicking here to use the contact form, we'd love to meet you and will gladly roll out the red carpet.

Social/Informal Meetings

Being a friendly bunch, we like to go out. Once month, usually on a Tuesday, we have a lunch at Cobham Sports Club, meeting at 1200 for 1230. Recent changes at the sports club mean we now have two choices for meals, but this does change on every visit. Irene kindly organises the meals, and needs your choices in advance, which she usually does at the monthy meetings. Costs are currently: 1 course - £8.95 & 2 courses - £12.

Please note: In the event of a no show, charges WILL be made for food ordered unless cancelled 24 hours in advance. Contact Cobham 01202 885773 or Irene 01202 874249

In addition to the lunches, we regularly visit Plowmans Garden Centre (also on a Tuesday) for a coffee morning, and there is no booking required, just come along.

Therapies and Activities

Exercise Class

Our weekly exercise class, led by physios from BWT, goes from strength to stregth. Classes are every Thursday at 1200pm, EXCEPT on monthly meeting day (third Thursday in the month), when it is at 1230pm. You will need an assessment from BWT (free of charge) to make sure you're suitable for the classes, so if you are interested, please get in touch using one of the methods on the contact page (click here to go to the contact page). There is a small charge, currently £5 per class attended.

Tai Chi

Studies have shown that regular sessions of Tai Chi are a great weapon in the fight against Parkinson's and has major benefits for others as well. The weekly sessions on Mondays at 1200 are an hour long and cost just £5 each. Paul Hammerston is the tutor, who boasts over 30 years in Tai Chi, a relaxed style and takes the time to explain things so people know what they are supposed to be doing and why! Anyone is welcome to join and our classes have a whole range of abilities so don't feel you'll be the new person, you'll fit in just fine. Just come along to the Allendale Centre in Wimborne and join in this popular and fun class.

Speech Therapy

Further improve your vocal communications with professional speech therapy. The monthly sessions have a maximum group size of 6 and are an hour long, all for just £10 each - now that is a fantastic opportunity! Anyone is welcome to join but sessions must be booked, and an assessment is required so your personal needs can be calculated. You can arrange this by getting in touch using one of the methods on the contact page (click here to go to the contact page). If you cannot make a session, please let Margaret Stephens (therapist) know on 07763 235997, thank you.

Singing Group

It's well known that Parkinson's affects vocal communications which is why we've set up our singing group - to keep and maybe improve, the voice we have. Anyone is welcome to join us in our monthly sessions, and a sense of humour is essential. Led by a lovely talented singers, fun is the foremost aim, whilst improving our vocal abilities at the same time. Use it or lose it, as they say, and we could all do better!

Nordic Walking

Using poles whilst walking helps improve balance and agilty and is covid compliant in these socially distanced times. It is touted as vey beneficial by those who partake and the group is led by Lorien Holiday at Avon Heath Country Park - various dates are available. Please contact us on 07707 710058 for more information on costs and avaliability.
